Itomaki Tachi Koshirae Featuring Black Lacquered Saya Scabbard with Mitsudomoe Crests in Mother-of-Pearl Inlay

103.6cm

The koshirae fittings and mountings for a tachi sword signed “Ichi Sukeshige,” which has been designated important cultural property. Dark blue strings are used for the tsuka-maki (the wrapping on the tsuka hilt) and the watari-maki (the wrapping on the saya scabbard). The saya is coated with black lacquer, and decorated with hidari-mitsudomoe crests (three comma-shaped figures in a clockwise circle) in mother-of-pearl inlay. All of the metal fittings are made of shakudo (an alloy of copper and gold), blending into the overall black of the koshirae, and creating a masculine, graceful impression.
