Samurai Fashion • The Beauty of INRO and Sword Fittings

Wed., October.20.2021 ~ Sun., February.20

Samurai have been at the center of Japanese politics since the Kamakura period. The samurai's unique spirit and aesthetic sense from the Nanbokucho Period to the early Edo Period had a profound impact on culture and art. In the Edo Period, many of the works created demonstrated a high degree of craftsmanship, with techniques such as engraving, lacquer work, mother of pearl, and red lacquer being fashioned into objects such as INRO (small decorative boxes) and sword fittings, which were popular among samurai.

This exhibition focuses on the fashion of samurai, and introduces swords and sword fittings, with a focus on the INRO collection, which demonstrate the high technique of the Edo Period. We hope you enjoy the intricate craftsmanship of the INRO and sword fittings.
